New Jersey - Onward and Upward

This is a call for youth leaders to build upon the rich legacy in New Jersey of growing the Boy Scouts of America -- to now build up its Christian alternative, Trail Life USA. Many men and women helped to instill time honored values taught using the Scout Oath (Duty to God & country, others, and then self), Law, Motto, & Slogan.

You know that from 1954-1978 the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America operated its second National Headquarters North Brunswick, New Jersey, sometimes referred to as New Brunswick. In addition from 1932-1979 the BSA's National Training Center was located in Mendham, New Jersey at the Schiff Scout Reservation. This camp also hosted the first Wood Badge (adult leader) courses held in the United States.

Remember men like William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt – he was one of the BSA's most prolific writers. He wrote numerous articles for Boys' Life and Scouting magazines, including a column aimed at patrol leaders under the by-line of "Patrol Leader Green Bar Bill". At least 12,610,000 copies of his three editions of the Boy Scout Handbook were printed.

And the BSA’s Service organization the Order of the Arrow was expanded here with the first Order of the Arrow ceremony for the Vigil Honor. It was held in New Jersey by E. Urner Goodman using Scouts from the Treasure Island Scout Reservation. The 1925 and 1936 National Order of the Arrow Lodge Meetings were held at Treasure Island, New Jersey.

These are just a few of the noteworthy happening in New Jersey that have shaped the lives of countless numbers of young men. I myself was personally touched by being selected to attend a week long advanced Junior Leader Training at the Schiff Scout Reservation. I still fondly remember boys from all over the county gathered together to shapen our Scoutng spirit and skills to lead others. Yes, I learn much from scouting to carry me into manhood, but today I have chosen a higher upward trail, and I ask you to follow.

Today I’m part of a new generation of youth workers (Trailmen) following in the footsteps of the original scouting ideas, based on truth & knowledge. We still teach adventure, character & leadership development, but this time from a totally Christian worldview, built upon the timeless value of the Bible. So will you youth leaders in New Jersery help? – We are looking for those willing to help build up the existing local Troops and to a raise up an Area Team (of non-troop members) to share our vision to be the premier national character development organization for young men which produces Godly and responsible husbands, fathers, and citizens.
